The Voice of the Shuttle began in late 1994 as an introduction to the Web for humanists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Its mission has been to provide a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources that at once respects the established humanities disciplines in their professional organization and points toward the transformation of those disciplines as they interact with the sciences and social sciences and with new digital media. VoS emphasizes both primary and secondary resources, and defines its audience as people who have something to learn from a higher-education, professional approach to the humanities.
The Voice of the Shuttle nacque nel 1994 come un'introduzione al Web per gli umanisti dell'Università della California, Santa Barbara. La sua missione è stata quella di fornire una guida strutturata e brevemente annotata alle risorse online che rispetta le discipline umanistiche definite nella loro organizzazione scientifica e punta verso la trasformazione di quelle discipline mentre interagiscono con le scienze, le scienze sociali e con i nuovi media digitali. VoS enfatizza sia le fonti primarie che secondarie e circoscrive il suo pubblico a persone che hanno qualcosa da imparare da un'istruzione superiore e da un approccio professionale agli studi umanistici.
